Third Paradise DMZ: the Art of Demopraxy in Korea Semptember 29-30, 2025, Camp Greaves
주한이탈리아문화원, 경기관광공사, 그리고 피스톨레토 치타델아르테 온루스 재단이 공동 주관으로 한국의 31개 시민단체와 함께 캠프 그리브스에서 제3의낙원 DMZ를 개최한다. 미켈란젤로 피스톨레토의 제3의 낙원과 실천 민주주의(Demopraxy) 원칙을 공동 참여를 통해 현실로 구현하는 포럼이자 참여형 미술 설치 예술로, 분단의 역사적 현장을 반성, 대화, 공존, 지속 가능성을 위한 공간으로 탈바꿈시킨다.
Organized by the Italian Cultural Institute in Seoul, the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization, and Fondazione Pistoletto Cittadellarte Onlus at Camp Greaves, the Third Paradise DMZ is both a forum and a participatory art installation involving 31 civic organizations in Korea. It brings Michelangelo Pistoletto’s Third Paradise and the principles of Demopraxy to life through collective engagement, transforming a historic site of division into a space for reflection, dialogue, coexistence, and sustainability.
데모프락시 - 실천 민주주의
미켈란젤로 피스톨레토의 핵심 사상인 데모프락시(Demopraxy), 치타델아르테 디렉터인 파올로 날디니가 처음 제시한 개념)는 실천을 통한 민주주의 구축을 강조한다. 여기에서 예술은 인류, 지구, 그리고 미래를 위한 중요한 대화를 촉발하는 도구이며, 그의 프로젝트 아트 선언문(”Project Art” manifesto, 1994)가 설파한 바이기도 하다. 데모프락시를 바탕으로, 작가와 그의 재단 치타델아르테는 데모프락시 오페라(Demopraxy Opera)를 출범시켰다. 지속가능한 발전을 위한 유엔 2030 어젠다(UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development)를 근간에 두고 지속가능성과 평화 실현을 위해 지역에서 활동하는 단체들 간 네트워크를 구축하고, 현재의 주요 문제 해결을 목적으로 하는 포럼과 전시이다.
DEMOPRAXY
Michelangelo Pistoletto’s core idea, Demopraxy — originally conceived with Cittadellarte’s Director Paolo Naldini — emphasizes building democracy through practice. In this vision, art becomes a tool for sparking meaningful conversations about humanity, the planet, and our shared future, echoing the principles set out in his Project Art manifesto (1994). Building on Demopraxy, Pistoletto and his foundation, Cittadellarte, have launched the Demopraxy Opera: a forum and exhibition designed to create a network of local organizations working toward sustainability and peace in line with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, while also addressing today’s most pressing challenges.

제3의 낙원은 첫 번째 낙원과 두 번째 낙원의 융합입니다.
첫 번째는 인간이 자연에 완전히 통합되었던 낙원입니다. 두 번째는 인간이 현재의 세계화 단계에 도달하는 과정에서 만들어 낸 인공 낙원입니다. 이 낙원은 인공적인 욕구, 인공적인 산물, 인공적인 안락함, 인공적인 쾌락, 그리고 모든 형태의 인공물로 이루어져 있습니다. 인류는 진정한 인공 세계를 형성했으며, 이는 유익한 효과와 함께 지구 규모로 기하급수적으로 진행되는 돌이킬 수 없는 쇠퇴 과정을 초래하고 있습니다. 제3의 낙원은 인공과 자연 사이의 균형 잡힌 연결로 실현된 인류의 세 번째 단계입니다.
제3의 낙원은 인류 생존을 보장하기 위해 필수적인, 새로운 차원의 지구 문명으로 가는 통로입니다. 이를 위해 우리는 무엇보다도 공동의 삶을 이끄는 원칙과 윤리적 행동을 재정립해야 합니다.
제3의 낙원은 모든 사람이 우리 지구의 비전에 대한 개인적인 책임을 지도록 이끄는 위대한 신화입니다.
"낙원"이라는 용어는 고대 페르시아어에서 유래되었으며 "보호된 정원"을 의미합니다. 우리는 이 지구를 보호하고 그 안에 사는 인간 사회를 치유해야 하는 정원사입니다.
수학적 무한대 기호를 재구성한 제3의 낙원 상징은 세 개의 연속된 원으로 이루어져 있습니다. 바깥쪽 두 원은 자연과 인공을 포함한 모든 다양성과 모순을 나타냅니다. 가운데 원은 반대편 원들이 합쳐져 만들어지며 새로운 인류가 만들어지는 자궁을 상징합니다."

"What is the Third Paradise?
It is the fusion between the first and second paradise. The first is the paradise in which humans were fully integrated into nature. The second is the artificial paradise, developed by human intelligence to globalizing proportions through science and technology. This paradise is made of artificial needs, artificial products, artificial comforts, artificial pleasures, and every other form of artifice. Humankind has created a truly artificial world which has triggered, in an exponential manner and in parallel with beneficial effects, irreversible processes of decline and consumption of the natural world. The Third Paradise is the third phase of humanity, realized as a balanced connection between artifice and nature.
The Third Paradise is the passage to a new level of planetary civilization, essential to ensure the survival of the human race. To this purpose we first of all need to re-form the principles and the ethical behaviours guiding our common life.
The Third Paradise is the great myth that leads everyone to take personal responsibility in the global vision.
The term “paradise” comes from the Ancient Persian and means “protected garden”. We are the gardeners who must protect this planet and heal the human society inhabiting it.
The symbol of the Third Paradise, a reconfiguration of the mathematical infinity sign, is made of three consecutive circles. The two external circles represent all the diversities and antinomies, among which nature and artifice. The central one is given by the compenetration of the opposite circles and represents the generative womb of a new humanity."

The Third Paradise assumes a concrete and operative form through the activities of Cittadellarte and its global network (made of Embassies and Demopraxy OPERAS, and hundreds of partners), and the best practices presented in Geographies of Change and VisibleProject.

[단체소개]
‘유기농펑크’는 헤비메탈 음악을 하는 친구를 통해 장난스럽게 지어진 별명입니다. 친구는 “펑크는 3분이면 써”라고 농담하면서도 유기농에 대한 설명을 들으며 넓은 스펙트럼과 DIY 정신이 느껴져 우리가 짓는 텃밭 농사에 펑크 정신이 깃들여져 있다는 생각을 했다고 해요. 그 농담과 의미가 좋아 2017년부터 유기농펑크를 둘이서 하는 텃밭 농사의 프로젝트 이름으로 정했습니다.
이후 ‘유기농펑크’에 유기농의 연결과 순환, 펑크의 DIY, 저항정신을 담는 활동으로 확장하고 있습니다. 우리는 퍼머컬쳐, 자연농을 시도해보고 다양한 생태농사를 짓는 농민들의 기록을 남기는 것뿐 아니라 모두가 자신이 남기는 것(쓰레기)을 통해 농사에 참여할 수 있다는 가능성을 제시합니다.
[활동소개]
2014년부터 도시에서 작은 텃밭을 가꾸며 퍼머컬쳐와 자연농 등 자연에 심각하게 개입하지 않고 함께 살아가는 방식의 농사를 공부하고 시도하고 있습니다. 소농과 여성농민과 인연을 맺은 것을 계기로 2017년부터 그들의 생태적인 삶과 농사 방식을 기록해 왔습니다.코로나 19 팬데믹 이후 재택근무로 전환한 것을 계기로, 기후위기와 팬데믹 시대를 사는 시민의 역할과 실천을 고민하게 되었습니다. 그 실천으로 농민과 소비자를 연결하는 활동의 매개로 유기질 쓰레기에 집중하고 있습니다. 처음에는 개인이 할 수 있는 퇴비 실천 워크숍을 진행해 왔고, 2021년, 그것을 확장하는 방식으로 살고 있는 동네에 ‘귤현동분해정원’을 만들어 지금까지 주민들과 음식물쓰레기를 퇴비화해오고 있습니다. 2023년에는 분해정원의 한계를 재구성해 ‘농부시장 마르쉐’에서 ‘유기농펑크X마르쉐 퇴비클럽’을 기획・운영하고 있습니다. 분해정원과 마르쉐에서 각각 매년 평균 1000L가 넘는 음식물쓰레기와 커피박, 달걀껍질 등을 퇴비로 돌려 가드닝을 하고 있습니다.
이러한 실험을 통해, 도시에서도 누구나 작게나마 생태적 순환에 참여할 수 있다는 가능성을 발견했고, 이 경험을 더 많은 사람들과 나누기 위해 기록하고 실천하며 살아가고 있습니다.
“organicpunk” is a nickname playfully given through a friend who plays heavy metal music. My friend joked, "Punk can be written in three minutes," but upon hearing about organic farming, he felt its broad spectrum and DIY spirit. He thought the punk spirit was infused into the garden farming we do. We liked that joke and its meaning, so in 2017, we decided to use “organicpunk” as the name for our garden farming project.
Since then, we have expanded our activities to embody the connections and cycles of organic farming, along with punk's DIY and resistance spirit, under the banner of “organicpunk”. We not only experiment with permaculture and natural farming and document the practices of diverse ecological farmers, but also propose the possibility that everyone can participate in farming through what they leave behind (waste).
[Activity Introduction]
Since 2014, I have been cultivating a small urban garden and studying and experimenting with farming methods like permaculture and natural farming that coexist with nature without serious intervention. After connecting with small-scale farmers and women farmers, I began documenting their ecological lives and farming practices starting in 2017.
After transitioning to remote work following the COVID-19 pandemic, I began contemplating the role and actions of citizens navigating the climate crisis and pandemic era. As part of this practice, I'm focusing on organic waste as a medium connecting farmers and consumers. Initially, I conducted workshops on composting practices individuals could undertake. In 2021, expanding on this, I created the “Gyulhyeon-dong Compost Garden” in my neighborhood, where residents and I have been composting food waste ever since. In 2023, we restructured the decomposition garden's limitations to plan and operate the “organicpunk X Marche Compost Club(farmxferm)” at the 'Farmer's Market Marche'. At both the compostgarden and the Marche, we compost over 1,000 liters of food waste, coffee grounds, eggshells, and more annually, using it for gardening.
Through these experiments, we discovered the possibility that even in cities, anyone can participate in ecological cycles, however small. To share this experience with more people, we document and practice it as we live our lives.
