제3의 낙원 DMZ – 미래를 재건하는 기억은 행위와 흔적이 공존하는 방식으로 전개된다. 참여자들의 몸짓을 통해 탄생하는 설치 작품이다. 캠프 그리브스의 옛 탄약고 내부에 36미터 길이의 삼베 밧줄로 세 개의 서로 연결된 원을 그린다. 이는 미켈란젤로 피스톨레토의 제3의 낙원을 상징하는 것으로, 자연과 인공, 과거와 미래, 자아와 타자라는 대립되는 것들 사이의 균형을 의미한다.
이 설치 작품은 참여를 통해 생명을 얻는다. 각 참여자는 세 장의 종이 카드를 받고 빨간색, 파란색, 검은색으로 변화를 위한 명제(정), 대조 또는 대화의 반명제(반), 그리고 다음에 일어날 일을 상상하는 “합”을 쓰도록 초대받는다. 이 메시지들은 의식과 같은은 몸짓을 통해 밧줄에 묶인다. 친밀하면서도 공유되는 행위, 기원을 적은 끈이나 기와에 새겨진 축복을 떠올리게 한다.
설치 퍼포먼스가 계속될수록 밧줄은 단순한 상징 이상의 의미를 지닌다. 목소리, 갈등, 그리고 화해를 하나의 집단으로, 대화와 기억의 살아있는 지도로 모은다. 밧줄과 카드를 연결하는 모든 매듭은 만남을, 모든 카드는 비전의 조각을 표상한다.
분리와 가능성 사이에 멈춰 있는 공간 DMZ 안에서 이러한 움직임은 더욱 증폭된 의미를 지닌다. 오랫동안 침묵과 분열로 정의되었던 장소는 예술을 통해 교류와 공존의 장소가 된다. 고독한 기록으로 시작된 것이 공동의 예술 작품이 된다. 참여 행위 자체가 퍼포먼스이며, 수많은 손길에 의해 변형된 밧줄은 그 전시이다. 이처럼, 제3의 낙원 DMZ - 미래를 재건하는 기억은 예방적 평화를 살아있는 실천으로 구현한다. 기억은 희망으로, 차이는 관계로, 예술은 공존의 매개로 다시 태어난다.
Third Paradise DMZ – Memories to Rebuild the Future unfolds as both action and trace, a work born through the gestures of its participants. Inside the former military bunker at Camp Greaves, a 36-meter hemp rope delineates three interlinked circles: the emblem of Michelangelo Pistoletto’s Third Paradise, a vision of balance between opposites—nature and artifice, past and future, self and other.
The installation comes to life through participation. Each participant receives three cards of pressed paper and is invited to write in red, blue, and black: a thesis for change, an antithesis in contrast or dialogue, and a synthesis that imagines what may come next. These messages are then tied to the rope in a ritual gesture—an act at once intimate and shared, recalling prayer ribbons or the blessings once inscribed on Korean giwa tiles.
As the performance accumulates, the rope becomes more than a symbol. It gathers voices, conflicts, and reconciliations into a collective body, a living map of dialogue and memory. Every knot marks an encounter, every card a fragment of vision.
Within the DMZ—a space suspended between separation and possibility—this gesture takes on amplified meaning. A site long defined by silence and division becomes, through art, a place of exchange and coexistence. What begins as a solitary inscription becomes a shared artwork. The participatory act itself is the performance; the resulting rope transformed by countless hands is its exhibition. In this way, Third Paradise DMZ – Memories to Rebuild the Future enacts Preventive Peace as a lived practice: memory tied to hope, difference bound into relation, art reborn as the medium of coexistence.
