왜 DMZ인가 - 경계, 대화, 그리고 상상

경계는 거리, 차이, 배제, 그리고 정체를 의미하는 의미론적 매개체이다. 그러나 빅터 콘라드가 우리에게 상기시키듯, 21세기에 경계는 "필터이자 통로, 그리고 불필요하고 무의미한 선"으로도 기능한다. 경계는 사람들에게 장벽이 되는 동시에 물질적, 비물질적 세계 흐름을 가능하게 하기도 하다. 오늘날 경계는, 표면적 경계가 없는 세상에서 사람들이 이를 다루는 방식을 찾아가면서, 국가 영토보다는 문화적 순환과 더 밀접하게 연관된다.

한국의 비무장지대(DMZ)는 이러한 역설을 잘 보여준다. 전쟁으로 형성된 DMZ는 경계의 복잡한 의미가 실체화되는 사회정치적 공간이다. DMZ는 분단의 무게를 짊어지고 있지만, 동시에 다양성의 장소가 되었다. 관광을 통해 볼거리가 되고, 생태학적 연구를 통해 면밀히 조사되고, 예술, 건축, 그리고 문화 담론의 주제로 탈바꿈했다. 데이비드 로웬탈는 "과거는 어디에나 있다… 주목받든, 무시하든, 소중히 여기든, 경멸하든, 과거는 어디에나 존재한다"고 했다. DMZ가 그렇다. 전쟁의 유물이자 현재에 공존을 다시 상상할 수 있는 캔버스이다.

DMZ를 따라 평화라는 문제를 해결하기 위해 수많은 구조물과 프로그램이 만들어졌다. 이곳은 갇혀 있는 "우리"가 대화를 모색하는 곳이다. 배제의 공백을 메우고 앞으로 어떤 일이 일어날지 상상하기 위해서이다. 그러나 이러한 대화는 단순히 정치적이거나 제도적인 것이 아니다. 예술을 통해 촉발되고 승화되는 경우가 많다. 예술은 경계를 분리의 선에서 만남의 공간으로, 배제의 장소에서 통합의 플랫폼으로 변화시키는 언어가 된다.

포럼이자 참여형 작품 설치인 제3의 낙원 DMZ는 이와 같은 대화에 참여하여 이원론적 패러다임을 초월하고 배타적인 분열을 넘어 지속 가능한 미래를 제시하고자 한다. 이틀 동안 다양한 분야의 40명이 넘는 전문가들이 모여 지식을 공유하고, 대화에 참여하며, 새로운 사고방식을 고취할 것이다. 치타델아르테의 방법론과 실천 민주주의 예술 선언문(Manifesto of the Art of Demopraxy)을 기반으로 하는 이 프로젝트는 존중, 호기심, 그리고 포용에 기반한 공동 창작과 경청의 공간을 조성한다.

여기에서 제3의 낙원은 상징적이면서도 실천적인 명제로 기능한다. 차이를 지우는 것이 아니라, 다양성, 통합, 그리고 공존이라는 공통된 틀 속으로 엮어 넣어 극복해야 한다는 것이다. 한때 무인지대였던 DMZ는 가능성의 실험실이 된다. 전쟁의 유물이 유산으로 재해석되고, 침묵이 대화가 되며, 배제가 집단적 상상력으로 변모하는 곳이다.

그러므로, DMZ에서 경계에 대해 이야기하는 것은 단순히 벽과 울타리에 맞서는 것이 아니라, 그것들에 부여된 문화적 의미를 인식하는 것이다. 인류가 어떻게 앞으로 나아갈 수 있을지, 분리의 정체에 갇히는 것이 아니라 대화와 상상력이 합쳐질 때 나타나는 다양한 존재들을 어떻게 포용할 수 있을지 묻는 것이다. 포럼과 작품 설치 제3의 낙원 DMZ는 배타적이고 세분화된 패러다임을 극복하고 대화를 통해 경계와 차이를 극복하며 지속 가능한 미래를 창조하는 방법을 함께 상상하는 것을 목표로 한다. 치타델아르테의 실험적 방법론 - 데모프락시 오페라는 존중, 호기심, 포용, 포용을 기반으로, 함께 창조하기와 듣기, 배우기 및 공유하기를 위한 공간을 제공하고 육성하는 것으로 구성되며, 이는 집단 지성의 출현을 촉발한다.

Why DMZ: Borders, Dialogue, and Imagination

Borders are semantic mediators, signifying distance, difference, exclusion, and stagnation. Yet, as Victor Konrad reminds us, in the twenty-first century, they also function as “filters and conduits, and as redundant and meaningless lines.” They are simultaneously barriers to people and enablers of global flows, both material and immaterial. Borders today are more aligned with cultural circulation than national territories, shaping how people deal with boundaries in an ostensibly borderless world.

The Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) epitomizes this paradox. Created by war, it is a socio-political site where the complex meaning of borders becomes tangible. The DMZ carries the weight of division, but it has also become a site of multiplicity: spectacularized through tourism, scrutinized in ecological research, and transformed into a theme of art, architecture, and cultural discourse. As David Lowenthal reminds us, “The past is everywhere… noticed or ignored, cherished or spurned, the past is omnipresent.” The DMZ embodies this: it is at once a relic of war and a canvas for reimagining coexistence in the present.

Many structures and programs have been built along the DMZ to address the question of peace. It is a place where the trapped “WE” seeks dialogue—to dilute the vacuum of exclusion and to imagine what comes next. This dialogue, however, is not merely political or institutional; it is often triggered and sublimated through art. Within this context, art becomes the language that transforms borders from lines of separation into spaces of encounter, from sites of exclusion into platforms of integration.

With a forum and a participatory art installation, the Third Paradise DMZ enters this conversation, seeking to transcend dualistic paradigms and propose a sustainable future beyond exclusive divisions. Over the course of two days, more than forty experts from diverse fields will gather to exchange knowledge, engage in dialogue, and inspire new ways of thinking. Guided by the methodology of Cittadellarte and its Manifesto of the Art of Demopraxy, the initiative cultivates spaces of co-creation and listening, grounded in respect, curiosity, and inclusion.

In this context, Third Paradise functions as a symbolic and practical proposition. It calls for overcoming differences not by erasing them but by weaving them into a shared fabric of diversity, integration, and coexistence. The DMZ, once a no-man’s land, becomes a laboratory of possibility: where war relics are reinterpreted as heritage, where silence becomes dialogue, and where exclusion may transform into collective imagination.

To speak of borders at DMZ, then, is not only to confront walls and fences, but also to recognize the cultural meanings ascribed to them. It is to ask how humanity might move forward—not trapped in the stagnation of separation, but embracing the multitudes that emerge when dialogue and imagination converge. Thus, the forum and the installation of the Third Paradise DMZ aim to imagine together how to overcome borders and differences, and create a sustainable future by overcoming exclusive and segmented paradigms through dialogue: the experimented methodology by Cittadellarte consists in delivering and cultivating a space for cocreation and listening, learning and sharing, based on respect, curiosity, embrace and inclusion that triggers the emergence of collective intelligence.
