포럼에 참여하기까지
사실 처음에는 망설였습니다. 어떤 행사든 주최나 후원사가 가진 영향력이 중요하기에 참여 자체가 어떤 입장 표명으로 읽히거나, 참여자들만 소진되고 마는 그런 자리일까도 걱정이었습니다. 그럼에도 실제 현장에서 일하는 사람들을 직접 만나보고 싶다는 생각으로 참여하게 되었습니다. 덕분에 평소라면 절대 만나볼 수 없었을 분들, 다양한 시민단체에서 일하시는 분들과 마주 앉아 이야기를 나누게 되었습니다. 그 경험만으로도 제 안에 또 다른 세계가 열렸다는 느낌이 들었습니다. 어떤 사람들은 “그런 건 책으로도 배울 수 있다”라고 말할지 모르겠지만, 저는 사람이 좋습니다. 직접 만나고 이야기 나누고, 얼굴과 목소리를 마주하고 배우는 게 제 방식이고, 그게 제가 세상을 이해하는 가장 좋은 방법이더라고요.
포럼을 통해 활동가로서 나의 시야와 이해가 확장되었다
강경수 작가의 이라는 그림책을 두고 다양한 조직에서 온 활동가들과 이야기를 나누었던 시간이 가장 기억에 남는데요, 정해진 내용이 있는 글과 달리 그림책은 훨씬 더 풍부한 이야기를 나눌 수 있었어요. 그림책 하나로 사회적 억압의 여러 층위를 자연스럽게 끌어내고, 서로의 경험을 깊이 있게 연결할 수 있다는 점이 놀라웠습니다. 각자의 위치에서 활동해 온 사람들이 겪는 현실, 사단법인 등록이나 운영 과정에서 마주하는 벽들, 거의 모든 단체가 겪는 자원과 인력의 부족 등 여러 이야기를 들으면서 제가 현장을 얼마나 부분적으로만 이해하고 있었는지도 깨달았습니다. 전반적으로 이번 포럼은 제 시야를 확장하고, 활동가로서의 고민을 다시 정교하게 만드는 시간이었습니다.
사각지대와 아웃리치(out-reach) 활동을 알게 되었다
포럼 이후 제 머릿속에는 계속 “사각지대”라는 단어가 떠다니고 있어요. 그래서 어떤 사안을 마주할 때마다 자연스럽게 지금 이 정책이나 논의에서 배제되는 사람은 누구일까를 먼저 떠올리게 됩니다. 자원의 불균형 속에서 추상적인 운동을 구체적 의제로 만드는 과정, 그 안에서 누구를 우선순위에 두고 무엇을 위해 연대해야 하는지에 대한 고민도 자연스럽게 따라왔습니다. 그러면서 접근성이 어디에서 무너지는지 보이기 시작했습니다. 그중 하나가 온라인 정보 환경이었는데, 양질의 콘텐츠를 찾는 것이 지극히 어렵다는 점이 있어요. 소셜미디어에서 쉽게 접근하는 콘텐츠들은 사실을 왜곡하거나 자극적인 내용만 소비하도록 유도하는 경우가 많아서 실제 문제의식을 느끼고 생각하는 데 도움이 될지 의문입니다. 실질적인 도움이 필요한 사람들은 현장에서 이뤄지는 많은 강연이나 이벤트에 참여하기 어렵다는 점도 알게 되었는데, 이런 한계점을 바탕으로 청소년이나 취약계층 등에 직접 찾아가는 봉사 및 서비스 활동을 아웃리치 활동이라고 하더군요. 이번 포럼 덕분에 이러한 개념들도 조금 더 이해할 수 있게 된 것 같습니다.
연대로 힘을 얻는다
올해 여러 분야와 다른 세대의 활동가들을 직접 만나면서, 나는 어떤 위치에서 무엇을 지향하며 활동하고 싶은가를 계속 돌아보는 시간을 가졌습니다. 지금은 제가 맡은 작은 문제들을 하나씩 해결해 나가면서 그 질문에 답해가는 과정에 있습니다.
당사자의 문제가 아니더라도 사회적 소수자들의 문제를 깊이 이해하고 연대하는 과정에서 개인적 무력감이나 우울감을 조금은 벗어나서 다른 활동가들의 열정을 통해 많은 에너지를 얻었습니다.
만남이 계속되었으면 좋겠다
이런 대규모 포럼뿐 아니라, 작은 모임에서도 다양한 형태의 담론이 계속 생겨나면 좋겠습니다. 저는 아직 경험이 매우 부족하지만, 언젠가는 직접 이벤트를 기획하고 사람들을 연결하는 역할을 수행해보고 싶습니다. 활동을 하다 보면 마음은 늘 다급하고, 삶의 여러 면에서 소진된 상태에서 협업을 해내야 하는 순간도 많습니다. 그래서인지 활동가들이 서로 언어를 확인할 수 있는 ‘만남’ 자체가 큰 의미로 다가왔습니다.
예술과 시민단체 활동의 연계를 탐색한다공공 예술이 꼭 거창한 선언일 필요는 없으며, 오히려 구체적인 실천을 할 수 있도록 사람과 사람을 이어주는 과정일 수 있다는 점을 알게 되었습니다. 그 예로 성소수자 단체에 있는 탈가정 청년과 그들의 이야기를 예술로 풀어내는
282북스북스를 연결하는 활동을 떠올려 보았습니다. 이렇게 뜻이 맞는 사람들과 작은 시도를 하나씩 해나가는 과정이 누군가에게 닿을 수 있는 새로운 길을 열어주고 세상을 움직이는 하나의 방법이 될 것으로 생각합니다.

Up until participating in the forum
I was hesitant at first. Since the influence of the organizers and sponsors is crucial in any event, I worried that my participation might be interpreted as a statement of opinion or that it might be one of those gatherings where only the participants end up exhausted. Nevertheless, I decided to participate because I wanted to meet people working in the field. Thanks to this experience, I was able to sit down and talk with people I would never have met otherwise, people working in various civic organizations. That experience alone opened up a whole new world for me. Some might say, "You can learn that from books," but I love people. Meeting them in person, sharing stories, and learning face-to-face from their voices is my way of understanding the world.
The forum broadened my perspective and understanding as an activist
One of my most memorable moments was discussing Kang Kyung-soo's picture book, Sesang (The World), with activists from various organizations. Unlike a text with a set narrative, a picture book allowed for a much richer conversation. I was amazed at how a single picture book could naturally illuminate the various layers of social oppression and deeply connect each other's experiences. Hearing about the realities faced by those working in their respective fields, the obstacles faced during the registration and operation of non-profit organizations, and the resource and personnel shortages faced by almost all organizations, made me realize how my understanding of the field was only partial. Overall, this forum served as an opportunity to broaden my horizons and refine my reflections as an activist.
I learned about blind spots and outreach activities
Since the forum, the word "blind spot" has been constantly floating around in my mind. Whenever I encounter an issue, I naturally first consider who is being excluded from the current policy or discussion. In the midst of resource imbalances, I've also naturally considered the process of transforming abstract movements into concrete agendas, and within that process, I've also considered who should be prioritized and what we should stand for. Then, I began to see where accessibility was breaking down. One such example was the online information environment, where finding quality content is extremely difficult. Content easily accessible on social media often distorts facts or encourages consumption of sensational content, making it questionable whether it can truly help people think critically about the issues. I also learned that those in need of practical help often struggle to attend lectures and events held on-site. Outreach refers to volunteer and service activities that address these limitations, directly reaching out to youth, vulnerable groups and others. Thanks to this forum, I feel I've gained a better understanding of these concepts.
Gaining strength through solidarity
This year, as I met activists from various fields and generations, I had the opportunity to continuously reflect on my position, my goals, and my aspirations for action. I'm currently in the process of answering those questions by solving the smaller issues I've been assigned, one by one.
Even when the issues weren't my own, the process of deeply understanding the issues faced by social minorities and standing in solidarity with them has helped me overcome some of my personal feelings of helplessness and depression. Through the passion of other activists, I gained a great deal of energy.
I hope these connections continue
I hope diverse forms of discourse continue to emerge, not only in large-scale forums like this one, but also in smaller gatherings. I still lack much experience, I hope to one day plan events and connect people. Activism often involves a sense of urgency, and there are often moments when collaboration is required while feeling exhausted in various aspects of life. Perhaps that’s why the “gathering” itself where activists can talk and show their own holds such profound meaning for me.
Exploring the connection between art and civic activism
I've come to realize that public art doesn't necessarily have to be a grand declaration; rather, it can be a process that connects people to concrete action. As an example, I considered connecting young people who have left home in LGBTQ+ organizations with
282 Books, a company that tells their stories through art. I believe that this process of making small, one-of-a-kind efforts with like-minded individuals can open new avenues of connection and become a way to move the world.
